The Golden Book

Strashun Library

Strashun Library with the Great Synagogue in the background, ca. 1915.

The Golden Book was a blank guest book originally purchased by the Strashun Library in 1903, when it was hoped that Theodor Herzl, who was visiting Vilna, would stop at the Library and sign it. Herzl never arrived, but every famous visitor, among them writers, poets, artists, and politicians, signed the Golden Book, often proffering comments on the Library, Vilna, or both.
